ALMA welcomes Pierre Cox as new Director

November 29, 2012

IRAM Director Pierre Cox has been appointed as the new Director of ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array based in the Chile. He will take up his duties as ALMA Director on April 01, 2013.

Pierre came to IRAM as Deputy Director in January 2005 from the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale, Orsay. He succeeded former Director Michael Grewing in 2006 and has held the position of IRAM Director since then.

During his tenure as Director of IRAM, Pierre has invested great energy and effort into establishing and maintaining effective relationships with authorities, in sharing experience and new ideas with a growing multinational user community, and in maintaining IRAM at the level of a top world institute in millimeter radioastronomical research. His leadership has secured a promising future for IRAM, most recently with the approval and initiation of NOEMA, the project to extend the IRAM interferometer, which will become operational in the near future.

We wish to express our appreciation and gratitude for Pierre’s work during these past seven years, and we wish him all the best in his new endeavors.
